What is IPTV, and how does it work?

No jargon, no sales pitch. Here is what the letters stand for, what happens between a server and your screen, and how it differs from the television you already know.

The short version

IPTV stands for internet protocol television. It means television delivered over an internet connection rather than through an aerial, a satellite dish or a cable running into your house.

That is the whole idea. Everything else — playlists, players, program guides — is machinery built around it.

How a stream reaches your screen

Broadcast television sends one signal outwards and every receiver in range picks up the same thing. IPTV works the other way around: your device asks for a particular channel, and a server sends that channel to your device specifically.

  1. The channel is encoded A live feed is compressed into a format that can travel over the internet, and cut into small chunks of a few seconds each.
  2. Your player requests the chunks When you pick a channel, your player app starts downloading those chunks one after another, slightly ahead of what you are watching.
  3. The player builds a buffer It keeps a few seconds in hand so a brief dip in your connection does not interrupt the picture. That short pause when you change channel is the buffer filling.
  4. Your device decodes and displays it The chunks are decoded back into video and audio. Newer devices do this in dedicated hardware, which is why they cope with streams that make an older device stutter.

Buffering, when it happens, is simply the player running out of chunks before the next one arrives — which is why connection stability matters more than headline speed.

The vocabulary you will actually meet

Playlist

A list of the channels your subscription includes and where each one lives. Your player reads it to build the channel list you see. This is the part we send you when your order is confirmed.

M3U

The most common playlist file format. It is a plain text list of entries, each naming a channel and its address. When a player asks for an “M3U URL”, it is asking where to fetch that list from.

EPG

The electronic program guide — the grid showing what is on now and what is on next. It arrives as a separate file from the playlist, which is why a channel list can load perfectly while the guide is still empty.

Player

The app that reads your playlist and plays the streams. It is general-purpose software that works with any provider, which is why you install it from your device’s own app store rather than from us.

VOD

Video on demand: the films and series you start whenever you like, as opposed to live channels running to a schedule.

How it compares to cable and satellite

IPTV compared with satellite and cable television.
Aspect IPTV Satellite or cable
Delivery Your internet connection A dish or a dedicated cable
Equipment A device you probably own A supplied set-top box
Installation An app and some details Usually an engineer visit
Watching elsewhere Anywhere with a connection Tied to the installation
Weather No effect Heavy rain can affect satellite
Weak point An unstable connection A long contract

What you need to get started

  • A compatible deviceA smart TV, a streaming stick, a phone, a tablet or a computer.
  • A steady connectionAround 10 Mbps per HD stream and 25 Mbps per 4K stream is a reasonable allowance. Steadiness matters more than the number.
  • A player appInstalled from your device’s own app store.
  • A subscriptionWhich is where the playlist details come from.

One honest caveat. Because IPTV runs over your home connection, the last few metres are yours. A router at the far end of the house, an evening when everyone is streaming at once, or an eight-year-old TV doing the decoding will all show up in the picture. Nothing a provider does can fix those — which is why we would rather explain them than promise them away.
